Plant details
While not often found in garden centres, the Constantinople hazel is worth seeking out for use in larger gardens. It makes a conical-shaped tree, standing around 20m (70ft) high. The strongly toothed, dark green leaves make an impressive backdrop for colourful summer border displays. They fall in autumn, around the same time the tree is buzzing with squirrels who come to harvest the clusters of nuts which are held in fringed husks. In late winter, the branches are hung with long, yellow catkins. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) which is for plants of outstanding merit.
