Plant details
Dahlias originate from Mexico and Guatemala where they produce single flowers. Enthusiasts in Europe in the 18th century bred many different forms, which now produce blooms that range from 5cm to 30cm (2in to 12in) in diameter. The rich purple, cactus flowerheads of 'Purple Gem' make a bold statement in the garden. It is an excellent variety for the back of the border or in cut-flower displays. Lift the tubers after the first frosts and bring indoors to overwinter in a frost-free place.
