Plant details

These are magnificent plants, with a stately grandeur similar to delphiniums and sometimes reaching an even greater height as their stout spikes of dense 4cm (1.5in) blooms soars above all else in the early summer border. To do well, these Asian plants need shelter and warmth, especially after flowering, so grow them where the sun bakes the tubers in late summer. The leaves appear early in wide clumps, and start to die down just as the flower spikes appear. The foxtail lily is fully hardy and prefers a sandy, well-drained soil. Ensure good drainage by adding grit to the soil at planting time, and by setting the tubers on a bed of sand or grit. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
