Plant details
The mats of soft foliage with tall spikes of butterfly-like flowers floating above them have a very informal, even slightly wild look that suits natural-style borders. This is a good plant for a cottage garden, for flowering ground cover on a bank or among shrubs, where it teams well with almost anything. It is as versatile in the garden as Gypsophila for the flower arranger. Use clumps throughout a border to link stronger shapes and colours together, and include in a white garden. The long flowering season from early summer into autumn makes it specially valuable. It prefers full sun and light, well-drained soil. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
