Plant details

Helianthus, known as sunflowers due to the way the flower heads follow the light from the sun, come in a large range, from the popular and common giant, to a multitude of smaller varieties, most of which are yellow and include double flowered forms. Helianthus annuus is the larger species, with broad and bristly, heart-shaped leaves, producing flower heads that grow upto 30cm wide. All Helianthus should be planted in a sunny position, with moist but well drained soil. Helianthus annuus 'Russian Giant' produces large, bright yellow flowers and is useful for hiding unsightly fences or walls as it is particularly tall.
