Helianthus are known as sunflowers due to the way the flower heads follow the light from the sun. They come in a wide range of forms, from the popular and common giant, to a multitude of smaller varieties, most of which are yellow and include double-flowered forms. Helianthus annuus is the larger species, with broad and bristly, heart-shaped leaves, producing flower heads that grow up to 30cm wide. All Helianthus should be planted in a sunny position, with moist but well-drained soil. Helianthus annuus 'Russian Giant' produces large, bright yellow flowers and is useful for hiding unsightly fences or walls, as it's particularly tall.
