Plant details

The basic species, H. paniculata, is a large or medium-size shrub, sometimes a small tree, from China and Japan. It is characterised by the large cone-shaped flower heads it bares on arching stems in late summer and autumn, each head comprising a mixture of tiny fertile flowers and the large conspicuous sterile florets. There are several varieties, all primarily creamy white with various other shades present. 'Unique' has very large heads weighing down the branches and well furnished with large florets. Plenty of space and regular pruning are advisable. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
