Plant details
Most holly varieties are either male or female (a few are self-fertile) and both kinds need to be grown in the vicinity for the female shrubs to bear berries. 'Handsworth New Silver' is a female, noted for its fine crops of orange-red berries, which in autumn stand out in startling contrast to the cream edged and greyish mottled leaves. Plants make dense attractive shrubs, with purple stems. Like all common holly varieties, it is a robust plant, ideal for hedges and screens, both inland and by the sea, but also makes a good specimen shrub. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
