Plant details

A Japanese grass which makes highly effective clumps of green leaves, with red tips, which gradually turn red all over. Grow it at the front of a border, to encircle an island bed, or at the foot of a white garden structure. The Japanese use it in shallow containers next to bonsai trees. It rarely flowers, and has been known to revert to all-green. Mulch young plants in winter to protect the roots which are slightly tender. If you live in a cold area grow in a sheltered spot and lift into the greenhouse over the winter.
