This species includes many of the red hot poker hybrids but the true species is an evergreen that blooms in late summer. It is valuable in providing flowers when most plants are past their best and it is useful as a cut flower.
Plant type: Hardy perennial
Flower colour: Red
Foliage colour: Mid-green
Sun exposure: Full sun, Partial shade
Soil: Well-drained/light, Acidic, Chalky/alkaline, Moist
Skill level: Beginner
Time to plant seeds: February to May
Time to divide plants: March to April
A kindly neighbour of mine split her Red Hot Poker the other week after it had finished flowering and gave me on of the tubers. She has chopped it right down to about 8". I replanted it but the large stem in the middle seems to be dying off.
Can anyone please tell me how to look after it as it is one plant I have always wanted and it would be a shame to lose it..
Thanks in advance
I have a knophofia plant and at the moment it is only foliage, is it alright if I cut the foliage down or will it kill the plant.
