Cos or romaine lettuce grow well in humus-rich, moist soil and normally take longer to mature than other lettuce types. 'Little Gem' is a quick-maturing variety which forms compact heads with sweet, firm hearts. It is a good variety to grow in small gardens. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
