This beautiful species, originally from China, as pure white, cup-shaped flowers which appear before the leaves in spring. It can grow into a large tree, reaching around 10m (30ft) in height and spread, and should be grown as a specimen plant. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence. Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. Protect plants from strong winds and apply an annual mulch of manure and leaf mould in early spring.
