Plant details
This breathtakingly beautiful species, introduced from China nearly a century ago, is fortunately lime-tolerant and may be grown in a range of situations. Starting as a deciduous bushy plant, it eventually spreads into a broad expansive shrub, with unusually narrow, pointed leaves and gracefully nodding blooms. These open first as pure white cups with rosy-purple or crimson stamens, later opening fully like bone-china saucers. It is a plant for a prominent position, ideally in light shade, where it can be enjoyed and admired in early summer. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
