Plant details
Cox's Orange Pippin' is a favourite variety that is often very difficult to grow in gardens, hence the popularity of other, more reliable varieties such as 'Sunset' with Cox-like qualities. Like all apples, trees are grafted on rootstocks which affect their size and vigour, and may be trained in a number of different shapes. Pruning depends on the tree form and vigour of the rootstock, and should be checked in a handbook. 'Sunset' is a Cox seedling, hardier than its parent and more tolerant of wet weather. Fruits often set very heavily and benefit from thinning. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
