Plant details
A beautiful and easily-grown Chinese shrub, this was introduced nearly a century ago and is still relatively uncommon in gardens. It is a close relative of spiraea, and grows in a similar way, producing long, arching stems from ground level, slender and slightly downy, some of which are cut down annually to maintain a supply of young, vigorous wood. The foliage is very handsome all season, and makes an effective background to the long elegant sprays of densely-packed pink flowers. Many neillia species are now classed as physocarpus.
