Tree peonies are actually shrubs, with flamboyant, papery blooms and interesting foliage. Although very elegant in appearance, they're actually rather robust if planted in the right spot, where they can last for many years.

There are many tree peony cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.

Paeonia 'Duchess of Kent' bears large, tulip-shaped buds which open to huge, double rose red flowers. As the flowers mature they develop a violet hue, which contrasts beautifully with red stems. For best results, grow 'Duchess of Kent' in rich, well-prepared soil in full sun. Protect from wind and prune in late winter when plants are still dormant.
