Tree peonies are actually shrubs, with extravagant, papery blooms and interesting foliage. Although very elegant in appearance, they're actually rather robust if planted in the right spot, where they can last for many years.

There are many tree peony cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.

Paeonia 'Duchess of Marlborough' is one of the better-known tree peonies, bearing large, semi-double, saucer-shaped blooms with bright pink petals. For best results, grow 'Duchess of Marlborough' in rich, well-prepared soil in full sun. Protect from wind and prune in late winter when plants are still dormant.
