Plant details

An essential winter root crop, this improves in flavour after frost and may be left safely in the ground until needed. Varieties differ in length and should be chosen according to the depth of cultivated soil. 'Avonresister' is a medium-sized variety that can be grown 8cm (3in) apart where space is limited, and has very good resistance to canker. Sow on a still day as the light papery seeds drift in the slightest breeze, and do not keep surplus seeds as they have a short storage life. In cold gardens, mulch with straw in winter to prevent freezing.
