Plant details
The pink-tinged white flowers of this penstemon provide a strong contrast with the reddish leaves and stems. It makes an excellent front-of-border plant for cottage gardens. A big sun-lover, it needs free-draining, rich soil with added leaf mould. Don't let it stand in cold, wet ground over winter. Avoid planting on clay soils. Also avoid exposed, windy sites where it can get damaged by the wind. As a precaution take replacement cuttings in autumn. Use a 10cm-length of stem, strip off the lower leaves, and sever the end of the stem just below a leaf joint. Keep in a frost-free place and grow on over winter for planting out again in spring.
