Most bedding petunia varieties can be classified as one of two kinds: Multifloras, which have a large number of smaller flowers that tend to be more weather-resistant, and Grandifloras, which have fewer blooms. However, the latter are enormous and often floppy, making them vulnerable to wind and rain unless they are grown in sheltered containers.
Petunia ‘Surfinia Burgundy’ is a spectacular cascading Grandiflora petunia, bearing large, weather-resistant blooms in deep maroon-purple. ‘Surfinia Burgundy’ is ideal for growing in containers and hanging baskets, and also makes good ground cover.
For best results, grow in full sun in a sheltered spot, and keep plants well watered.
Used frequently in gardens for impact of colour, petunias are originally from South America and are tropical plants. Most species are low spreading with soft, rounded leaves and large funnel shaped flowers, each made up of 5 fused petals. They are widely cultivated to offer a wide range of colours, sometimes with contrasting veins or dark eyes. Petunia 'Supertunia White Russian' produces white flowers with very dark red veins.
