Plant details

Also known as the Canary Island date palm, this is a plant for growing in a large container. It forms a thick trunk with large, leathery, deep green, frond-like leaves. Although not completeley hardy, it can be grown outside in very mild areas, where over time, it will form a large tree. In colder areas large plants can be protected with layers of hessian or straw. Alternatively grow in a container and move to a frost-free place in winter. Mature palms produce bunches of cream, bowl-shaped flowers in summer which are followed by small, black fruit. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit, which is for plants of outstanding excellence.
