Originating in China, this is one of the most striking of the yellow-stemmed bamboos.'Holochrysa' produces tall, straight canes that start off pale lemon and gradually become bright golden in colour as they mature. The effect is more pronounced than usual because of the thickness of the canes, which can be up to 4cm (2in) in diameter. It is a clump forming bamboo that grows best on moist but free-draining soil. It can be used in isolated clumps to create structure in the garden or planted in groups for an informal screen.
