Plant details

Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), the Ponderosa pine makes a useful specimen tree or windbreak. It is conical in shape when young, becoming columnar with age. The dense grey-green needles are borne in groups of three, and contrast attractively with the purple female cones which age to brown. Found growing wild in the Rocky Mountains, US, it enjoys a sunny position in well-drained soil.
