Plant details
Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), the Monterey pine is a common and beautiful site in its native California, USA. Conical in outline when young, it becomes broadly domed as it matures. The black bark is heavily ridged and contrasts attractively with the bright green needles, which are borne in groups of three. The female cones are glossy, yellow-brown and are held on the tree for up to 30 years. Plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil.
