Also known as scallions or salad onions, spring onions are simply immature onions, which are harvested before the bulb has had a chance to swell. Both the green tops and small white bulb are edible, and they are often chopped and eaten raw in salads or added to stir fries. The flavour of spring onions is much milder than mature onions.
Because they are harvested before they mature, there's no need to dedicate as much space to spring onions as you would for regular onions. Simply sow seed 15cm apart in shallow drills from spring to early summer. You should be able to harvest them after 6-8 weeks.
Allium cepa 'Pal' is a quick growing spring onion with bright green tops, which is slow to bolt.
