Clematis tubulosa is an unusual clematis, bearing clusters of scented blue, hyacinth-like flowers from June to September. It's ideal for filling the gap between the main summer flowers and the real autumn colours, combining particularly well with Japanese anemones. It also works well as ground cover under fruiting trees such as crab apple or edible quince. Silver, fluffy seedheads extend the season of interest after the flowers fade.

Grow Clematis tubulosa in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Falling into Pruning Group Three, simply cut stems back to the lowest pair of buds in February or March.
