Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii

Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii is a Chinese shrub, eventually developing into a small tree. It's a vigorous bushy species, spectacular from late summer onwards when its heads of pink buds open into balls of small white star-shaped flowers. These later develop into bright blue berries, each surrounded by rich maroon star-shaped calyces. It's perfect for growing as a specimen shrub in a mixed or shrub border, where its late-summer and autumn beauty can be fully appreciated. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

Grow Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, ideally in a sheltered spot such as in front of a sunny wall. In exposed gardens it may not be entirely hardy, and so small bushes should be protected with a winter mulch. Avoid damaging or bruising the foliage, which can smell unpleasant.
