Elaeagnus, also known by the common names thorny olive, spiny oleaster and silverthorn, are attractive shrubs that are native to Asia. They make good structural plants, particularly the evergreen varieties, and they work well as hedging. But one of their biggest selling points is that they’re salt tolerant, making them a reliable choice for coastal gardens.
Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge' is an evergreen shrub, bearing leaves with contrasting dark green centres and gold-coloured margins. Inconspicuous silvery flowers, with an intense fragrance, appear in October, followed by red fruit. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Drought resistant, Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge' is perfect for growing in well-drained soils as a hedge or screen, or trained as a climber against a wall.
