Euphorbia characias is a remarkably hardy sub-shrub, bearing soft stems and narrow grey-green leaves that look beautiful all year round. Originating from the Mediterranean, it's found on dry rocky slopes and scrubland. It forms a natural rounded shape and is ideal for growing in sunny herbaceous borders and gravel gardens.

Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii 'Lambrook Gold' is one of the best euphorbias available. An architectural perennial, it's perfect for adding a touch of drama to the border. Bluish-green foliage looks fresh all year round, and in early summer it's joined by large, dome-shaped, lime-yellow flowers that tower above it. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

For best results grow Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii 'Lambrook Gold' in well-drained soil in full sun. In summer, prune spent flowering stems down to the base of the plant to encourage a second flush.

Always wear gloves when working with euphorbias. The milky sap is a skin irritant.
