Incarvillea delavayi bears spectacular large, exotic-looking trumpet-shaped flowers. These are all the more remarkable as they appear slightly before the foliage, on straight stems poking up out of the soil. By the time the flowers are well open, the foliage has emerged to form a neat frill of ladder-like leaves beneath them, forming a good background. A variety of cultivars is available, including white-flowered variety 'Snowtop' (pictured).

Despite its exotic appearance, Incarvillea delavayi is perfectly hardy as long as it's grown in very well-drained soil – it's perfect for growing in a rock garden, container or sunny raised bed.
