Grown for their flamboyant, often fragrant blooms from late spring to summer, lilies are a stalwart of summer, herbaceous borders. They're well suited to growing in containers, where they can be positioned in borders as and when you need them.

Oriental lilies tend to have large, fragrant, outward-facing facing flowers. For best results they need acidic, or ericaceous soils, so grow them in containers if you have alkaline soil. Because blooms of many oriental lilies appear to look upwards, they're sometimes referred to as ‘stargazers’.

Lilium 'After Eight' is an attractive oriental lily with large, freckled, dark pink flowers, edged with white. It's a great choice for growing in containers of ericaceous (acidic) compost on a sunny patio. Water regularly and mulch annually with well-rotted leafmould or bark chips.
