Formerly known as Dimorphotheca, Osteospermum was raised for many years annually from seed as a half-hardy annual, and it is still worth sowing some mixtures for choosing good forms to keep going from cuttings. Many named cultivars have been developed since then, and have become popular for summer bedding, especially in containers in warm sunny sites.
Osteospermum 'Sunny Philip' produces flat, white, spatula-shaped petals which fold midway to reveal the contrasting purple underside. It's perfect for growing in a mixed, sunny border and makes an interesting cut flower.
Grow Osteospermum 'Sunny Philip' in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. A tender perennial, grow it as an annual or move pots indoors in autumn to overwinter.
