Whitecurrants are sweeter than redcurrants, but are rarely available to buy in the shops. The berries are creamy white and deiciously sweet, perfect for eating straight off the plant or using in summer puddings and jellies.

Like redcurrants, whitecurrants fruit well in northern regions. Ribes rubrum 'White Grape' is a vigorous, upright, deciduous, fruiting shrub with green, lobed leaves and many side shoots, making it good for training against a wall or fence. It has heavy crops of pale, sweet berries that are ripe in mid-summer.

Grow Ribes rubrum 'White Grape' in a sunny, sheltered site and prune annually in winter.
