Asters are in the daisy family and while some flower in spring, most flower in late summer and autumn, hence their common name Michaelmas daisy. They provide a welcome splash of colour when other flowers are starting to fade. They are an important source of nectar and pollen for late-flying insects.
Symphyotrichum 'Ochtendgloren' (pilosum var pringlei hybrid) produces lavender flowers with bright yellow centres. Previously known as Aster 'Ochtendgloren', this tall aster is a pretty choice for the back of a border. For best results plant in well-drained soil in a sheltered, partially shaded site. Cut back hard after flowering.
