Far more delicate in size than ordinary strawberries, the alpine variety has an exquisite flavour and perfume all of its own. It looks especially pretty scrambling through the daisy-like fleabane, which will flower all summer.
Plant it:
March - April
At its best:
July - September
Takes just:
40 minutes
-
Fix the pot securely to the wall before planting up. Pop a handful of crocks in the bottom, then half fill it with compost.
-
Plant the strawberries at the back of the pot, then plant the fleabane along the front. Tuck compost around their roots and firm it in with your fingers.
-
This combination of plants should overwinter safely in the wall pot. In autumn, tidy up the fleabane by cutting it back. Tuck the strawberries up for winter with a covering of straw.
"It's worth considering slug protection for your pot - they have been known to climb walls!"
