Alpine strawberries in a wall pot

You will need:

  • 3 alpine strawberry plants
  • 2 Mexican fleabane, Erigeron karvinskianus
  • Large wall pot
  • Multi-purpose compost
  • Crocks

Overview

Far more delicate in size than ordinary strawberries, the alpine variety has an exquisite flavour and perfume all of its own. It looks especially pretty scrambling through the daisy-like fleabane, which will flower all summer.

How to do it

  1. Fix the pot securely to the wall before planting up. Pop a handful of crocks in the bottom, then half fill it with compost.

  2. Plant the strawberries at the back of the pot, then plant the fleabane along the front. Tuck compost around their roots and firm it in with your fingers.

  3. This combination of plants should overwinter safely in the wall pot. In autumn, tidy up the fleabane by cutting it back. Tuck the strawberries up for winter with a covering of straw.
