The dark-green window box and richly coloured plants make a sensational combination. The red scabious takes centre stage, rising above a platform of dark heucherella foliage. A sleek look for the city slicker.
Plant it:
March - July
At its best:
May - September
Takes just:
20 minutes
-
Cover the bottom of the window box with crocks, then fill it two-thirds with compost.
-
Plant the scabious in the centre, sandwiched between the heucherellas. Top up the box with more compost, gently firming it around the plant roots with your fingers.
"Scabious is a short-lived perennial, but luckily it's easily propagated by taking cuttings in early spring."
"If you can't find this deep red scabious, try the more widely available chocolate cosmos, Cosmos atrosanguineus."
