Window box of scabious and heucherella

You will need:

  • 1 scabious, Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Chile Black'
  • 2 Heucherella 'Burnished Bronze'
  • Dark-coloured window box
  • Crocks
  • Multi-purpose compost

Overview

The dark-green window box and richly coloured plants make a sensational combination. The red scabious takes centre stage, rising above a platform of dark heucherella foliage. A sleek look for the city slicker.

How to do it

  1. Cover the bottom of the window box with crocks, then fill it two-thirds with compost.

  2. Plant the scabious in the centre, sandwiched between the heucherellas. Top up the box with more compost, gently firming it around the plant roots with your fingers.

Adam's Tip's

Adam's Tip

"Scabious is a short-lived perennial, but luckily it's easily propagated by taking cuttings in early spring."

"If you can't find this deep red scabious, try the more widely available chocolate cosmos, Cosmos atrosanguineus."
