SpringAlpine high fliers

Thrift, phlox and saxifrage in a pot

You will need:

  • 1 thrift, Armeria maritima
  • 1 alpine phlox, Phlox douglasii 'Lilac Cloud'
  • 1 saxifrage, S. 'Triumph'
  • Wall container
  • John Innes No. 2 compost with extra grit

Overview

Found growing wild on sea cliffs and mountain sides, thrift is a tough little plant with short, tufty foliage. Here, its bright pink, long-stemmed flowers provide a focal point from late-spring to summer. The low-growing alpine phloxes are covered in blooms from late-spring to early summer, as is the glossy mat of saxifrage.

How to do it

  1. Fill the container two thirds with compost and grit.

  2. Place the thrift centrally and surround it with both alpine phloxes, which will tumble towards the front, and saxifrage, which provides a dense cushion of green beneath the flowers.

Adam's Tip

Adam's Tip

"Alpine plants thrive in well-drained soil so plant them in a pot filled with John Innes No. 2 compost with extra grit added."
