Box always looks smart in a container but it's not the only shrub that can be clipped into shape. Myrtle is an excellent evergreen alternative. Faintly aromatic and with lovely white flowers in spring, it looks stunning from June to August, softened by a sea of blue campanula flowers.

Cover the bottom of the window box with crocks, then two-thirds fill it with compost.

Plant the myrtle in the centre of the box surrounded by the campanulas. Top up the box with compost, gently firming it around the plant roots with your fingers.

This container will overwinter outside if there's a protective wall close by; otherwise, insulate the box with bubble polythene to protect the roots from frost.
"Cut the myrtle back in spring and give it a tidy-up after flowering. Keep a check on the campanulas as they will spread vigorously. Cut them back as needed."
