Overview

In a large pot, mix together a rich purple osteospermum with zesty yellow and orange bidens, lantana, portulaca and California poppies for the perfect summer cocktail.

How To Do It

1Cover the bottom of the pot with crocks, then fill two-thirds with compost.

2Plant the osteospermum in the centre of the pot encircled by the lantana and poppies. Plant the bidens and the portulaca close to the edge of the pot so they can tumble over the sides.

3Stand the pot somewhere hot and sunny and watch it sizzle. Bring under cover at night while there's any threat of frost in May.

Adam's tip

Many of these plants can be raised from seed. Sow them into fibre pots in spring and you can transplant them into the container without disturbing their roots.
Take cuttings of the osteospermum in summer and overwinter them indoors in case you lose plants during a cold spell.
