Autumn & winterLighten up

pot of cyclamen, ivy and cineraria

You will need:

  • Square container
  • Multi-purpose compost
  • Crocks
  • 2 cineraria
  • 6 miniature cyclamen (some red, some white)
  • 4 ivies

Overview

The handsome, silver-leaved foliage plant cineraria adds sparkle to a dull winter's day, along with cheery variegated ivy, while brightly coloured red miniature cyclamen provide a vivid contrast and a festive splash of colour.

How to do it

  1. Position the container in a sheltered spot and where you want some winter interest, and place a layer of crocks at the bottom, then three-quarters fill with compost.

  2. Plant the cineraria in the centre of the container, to the same depth in the new compost as it was in its previous pot. Encircle it with the cyclamen plants and position the ivies at the front and sides of the pot so they can tumble over the edge.

  3. Fill the container with compost, to within 5cm of the rim, firming around the plants with your fingers to squeeze out any air pockets.

Adam's Tip's

Adam's Tip

"Make sure your pot has plenty of drainage holes in the base to prevent the compost becoming waterlogged in winter."

"Choose cyclamen that are specifically bred to be hardy and will survive a frosty winter."
