Summer Patio pond

Patio pond in a pot

You will need:

  • 1 waterlily, Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Helvola'
  • 1 Japanese rush, Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus'
  • Washed pea gravel, waterproof paint
  • Glazed pot, 60cm diameter
  • All-purpose silicone sealant
  • 2 aquatic planting baskets, 20cm diameter
  • Aquatic compost or heavy loam
  • 2 engineering bricks

Overview

Don't despair if you only have a tiny garden. Your dream of having a pond is easier to realise than you think. Our mini container pond is big enough to host your favourite aquatics and in no time, you'll be able to enjoy watching the wildlife it will attract.

How to do it

  1. Planting a waterlilyPrepare your container with waterproof sealant. Half-fill a planting basket with aquatic compost or heavy loam, firming it in place. Spread the waterlily's roots on top, taking care not to break them.

  2. Weighing down the compost with pea gravelFill in around the roots with more compost or loam, firming it in layers. Weigh it down with a layer of pea gravel.

  3. Lowering plants into the waterPlant the second basket with the acorus in the same way. Place the bricks in the container, then fill it with water and slowly lower the baskets into the pond.

  4. Pond in a potSurround the pond with pots for an eye-catching display. Check regularly for leaves and other bits of garden debris and remove them where necessary.

Adam's Tip

Adam's Tip

"Keep the pond water free from algae with oxygenating plants. Try water mint, hornwort or Ceratophyllum demersum."
