This pebble cage arrangement is a stylish twist on the alpines' traditional environment, and wouldn't look out of place in any modern garden or even as a contemporary table decoration. The dwarf size of Dianthus 'Fusilier' perfectly suits the proportions of this container, and rises above the pratia's low-growing mat of leaves and pale-blue flowers, while the Gypsophila cerastiodes blankets the metal and pebbles to soften it.
Plant it:
March - April
At its best:
June - August
Takes just:
20 minutes
-
Fill a pot with compost and place a wire mesh container inside the pebble gabion. Place the alpine pink centrally in the container and position the pratia and Gypsophila cerastiodes around it.
-
Arrange the gypsophila quite close to the edge of the pot, so it can spread and tumble over the cage to soften its appearance.
"For delicious fragrance, try Dianthus 'Pink Jewel' for its blooms that emit a traditional clove-like scent. "
