Gardeners' World

Trees & shrubsRose in a tub

Finished tub of flowers

You will need:

  • 2 roses; R. 'Rhapsody in Blue' and R. 'Boule de Neige'
  • 3 Heuchera 'Licorice'
  • 2 Salvia x superba 'Merleau'
  • 2 small blue violas
  • Large tin bath
  • Drill
  • Crocks
  • Good-quality, loam-based compost

Overview

Rosa 'Rhapsody in Blue', heuchera and violas give the display a purple theme. This is gracefully lifted by the white highlights and scent of R. 'Boule de Neige'.

How to do it

  1. Drill a good number of evenly spaced holes in the bottom of the bath, then scatter over a layer of crocks. Fill the bath two-thirds with compost.

  2. Plant the roses in the centre of the bath but towards the back. Next, evenly space the heucheras around the edge, filling in the gaps with the salvias and violas.

  3. Fill around your plants with compost, firming it in with your fingers. Place in a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered spot against a fence or wall.
