This rustic container filled with an orange pelargonium and a ruby red begonia is guaranteed to brighten up the gloomiest corner in your garden. Take care to keep the begonia out of the sun, or it will scorch.

The key to this container is its simplicity. Just add crocks to the bottom of the barrel for drainage, top up with compost and get planting.

Cut a few drainage holes in the plastic and fill the basket two-thirds with compost.

Fill in between the roots with compost, leaving a gap of around 2cm between the top of the compost and the basket's rim. Water in well and leave to drain before hanging in position.
