Steely grey pot

You will need:

  • 2 x Begonia rex
  • 2 x purple-leafed plectranthus, such as P. 'Mona Lavender'
  • Tall tapered grey stone or metal planter
  • Crocks
  • Multi-purpose compost

Overview

If you're short of sun in your garden but want an interesting summer display, try this rich blend of foliage plants. Both the plectranthus and begonia perform well in shade.

How to do it

  1. Cover the bottom of the planter with crocks, then fill two-thirds with compost.

  2. Plant the plectranthus in the centre of the planter sandwiched between the begonias. Top up with compost, firming it around the roots with your fingers.

  3. Bring undercover if frost is forecast. Bring the begonias in at the end of summer to use as houseplants. Take cuttings of the plectranthus and overwinter in a frost-free conservatory or greenhouse.

Adam's Tip

Adam's Tip

"As the plants grow, encourage their stems to weave together to create a glorious mass of foliage."
