Crocosmia, libertia and celosia pot display

You will need

  • Crocosmia 'Irish Dawn' x2
  • Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' x1
  • Libertia ixioides 'Goldfinger' x1
  • Celosia caracas x3
  • Terracotta pot, 45cm diameter
  • Multi-purpose compost
  • Slow-release fertiliser

While many container displays are looking past their best by August, this late-summer display will brighten up a corner of the patio right through autumn. The fiery colours of Crocosmia 'Irish Dawn' and Celosia caracas contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of libertia.
Plant it: all year round
At its best: April - August
Takes just: 20 minutes

How to do it:

Adding polystyrene to the pot

1 Place a layer of broken polystyrene or crocks in the base of the pot. This will aid drainage and reduce the volume of compost in the pot.

Adding compost to the pot

2 Add compost until the pot is two-thirds full. Push your fingers into the compost or gently knock the pot to remove air pockets.

Sprinking slow-release fertiliser over the compost

3 Sprinkle slow-release fertiliser over the compost, to keep the display looking good for as long as possible.

Planting up the display

4 Place the tallest plants at the back of the pot and the shorter plants at the front. Add more compost around the plants and firm gently.

Our tip

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep the display looking fresh.
