in : Pots & containers: Summer
Stand out from the summer crowd with this luxurious, rich and velvety container display. Pack a wide terracotta bowl with deep red Regal pelargoniums and earthy pink and orange flowers to stunning effect. Keep deadheading the flowers and they will reward you with continuous colour all summer.
Place a layer of crocks at the bottom of the container, then three-quarters fill with compost.
Plant the pelargoniums as the centrepiece to the display, then surround them with Trifolium repens plants. Position the alonsoas at the rear of the pot so their flowers can shoot up above the arrangement.
Plant the zaluzianskyas around the edge of the bowl so they can tumble over. Fill the container with compost, to within 5cm of the rim, firming around the plants with your fingers to squeeze out any air pockets.
Take softwood cuttings of the pelargoniums in spring or late summer for more plants.
Alonsoa is a perennial most often grown as an annual. So sow seeds outdoors in late-spring.
