Daffodil and primula window box

You will need

  • Narcissus 'Jetfire' x3 pots
  • Bellis perennis 'Red' x3
  • Primula 'Gold Lace' x2
  • Erica x darleyensis 'Winter Treasure'
  • Rustic window box
  • Plastic compost bag
  • Multi-purpose compost

The rich colours of the narcissus, primulas, heather and daisies contrast beautifully with the rustic wooden planter in this cheerful spring display. Plant it up in early spring and enjoy for several weeks. Then simply replant the daffodil bulbs, heather and primulas in the garden and repot your window box with summer-flowering plants.

Plant it: March - April
At its best: March - May
Takes just: 20 minutes

How to do it:

Cutting plastic to fit in the window box

Drill drainage holes in the container if necessary, and line it with plastic from an old compost bag, to stop the compost drying out. Cut the bag to size and pierce holes in the base.

Adding compost

Fill the window box two-thirds with compost.

Planting up the window box

Plant the daffodils in the centre, towards the back of the container, then book-end them with the primulas. Plant the daisies and the heather at the front. Add more compost around the plants and water thoroughly.

Our tip

To give them the best chance of flowering next year, allow the daffodils to fully die down before transplanting the bulbs.
