Primula sieboldii produces semi-evergreen rosettes of leaves, above which small flower spikes appear in spring. These spikes bear clusters of starry pink flowers that fade to paler tones with age. The foliage remains above ground nearly all year round, although plants will go dormant during periods of extreme heat or drought.
Plants grow happily on all but the driest soils, provided they're planted in dappled shade. They look great when planted in informal drifts.
Primula sieboldii 'Manakoora' bears delicate flowers in many shades of blue, including violet whites veined with blue. The petals are both smooth and fringed. For best results grow 'Manakoora' in a moist woodland garden, or around the edge of a pond. Don't cut back plants in autumn - instead tidy plants in spring to remove the worst old foliage to make way for fresh new growth. This allows plants to self-seed in drifts, creating a charming, natural look.
