Plant details
Only shallow chalk deters this robust and reliable evergreen species, which can be kept as a medium-sized shrub or allowed to develop slowly into a shapely branching tree. Compact, even low-growing varieties, such as willow-leafed 'Zabeliana', are available for various uses in the garden, while the species is usually planted to make a large hedge, screen or windbreak. 'Zabeliana' is excellent for ground cover, even under trees where it is unharmed by rain drips, and makes an attractive specimen shrub at the edge of a large border.
