Ranunculus take their name from 'rana' the latin for frog, probably because of their liking for damp conditions. Similar in appearance but distinct from the common buttercup, which can be a nuisance in lawns, it produces bright yellow, button-like flowers. Ranunculus ficaria 'Brazen Hussy' has attractive, blackish foliage.
